On
a constant evolutionary journey, this intrepid band of seekers,
"melds a rich spirituality and joie de vivre in their music
and performances. Combining all elements of danceable music, what
emerges from the Hip-Hop, Latin, Funk, Jazz, Reggae, and a splash
of electronica sampling, is a sublime good time." Vanessa
Salvia, Eugene Weekly.
Manifested
in the Spring of 2001, this ever-changing of premier players has
since been honing the sound that has made them a top draw in their
hometown of Eugene, OR, and beyond. Kawaida (pronounced kah-wah-eeda),
combines a constantly shifting, yet ever virtuosic group of players
of various and overlapping backgrounds; as the genres that influence
this well defined and self-aware, yet eclectic brand of music.
The
band itself, and/or the members therein, have shared the stage,
or performed with such acts as Les Claypool, Spearhead, Sound
Tribe Sector Nine, Steve Kimock, David Grisman, Robert Walter's
20th Congress, Fishbone, and many, many more.At the helm of this
ship is bandleader, vocalist, composer, tenor and soprano sax
player, and flautist, Duke LeVert. Wearing many hats, he deftly
guides this crack ensemble through the often unknown terrain that
is a given Kawaida performance. With guest performers constantly
joining the unit, along with the adventurous attitude pertaining
to improvisation maintained by the core group, no two Kawaida
performances are alike. After a brief hiatus, Kawaida had returned
to the stage once again to bring their fine music, and never pretentious
message of consciousness to the masses.
